William Travis Dungan, Sr.

William Travis “Bill” Dungan Sr., 91, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 1, 2016. He was born September 12, 1925 and he passed away peacefully in his sleep after succumbing to a lengthy illness. A member of the Ensley Christian Missionary Alliance Church for 65 years, he was an electrician onboard NAS Pensacola for almost 40 years. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre onboard a ship that saw combat off the coast of Okinawa. He was the tenth of 11 brothers and sisters and also the last survivor of the Fighting Dungan’s, 6 siblings who all served on active duty simultaneously during the war. He was a gifted natural athlete and avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting, fishing and anything to do with baseball. As a young man he rose through the professional ranks to play at AAA level. After baseball, he played competitive softball—well into his 80’s and then served as an umpire for many years. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Arcola and Ernest, his brothers, Raymond, Elton, Eugene, and Jack; sisters, Ernestine, Willodene, Olene, Marguerite, and Ruth. He was also preceded in death by his wife of almost 54 years, Betty Jean Maxwell Dungan and is survived by their five children, William Travis Jr., Donald, Joel, Terry and Sheryl, as well as one sister, Pat. He is also survived by his loving wife, Melba Grace (Dyson) Dungan, who brought him so much joy in his last decade on the Earth, as well as four grandsons, countless nephews, nieces, family members and friends. He was an inspiration to all who knew him and he will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and funeral services on Friday, October 7, 2016 at 10:00 a.m., both at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North, 1000 Hwy 29S, Cantonment, FL.
