Robert Winston Mills

Robert “Bob” or “Pop” Mills (83) of Pensacola passed away unexpectedly in his home Tuesday June 28, 2016. He recently had a close call with death, then made a miraculous recovery and had just returned home. We often referred to him as an old army tank, due to his ability to sustain many injuries yet always be able to bounce back. He was born in Clark County Georgia on December 5, 1932, to Myrtle Frier and Jonas Edward Mills. He is the last of seven siblings to pass away. He was proceeded death by his wife of 61 years, Allie Wanona Mills. He will now join her at Barrancas National Cemetery. Bob had a long successful military career. In high school he joined ROTC and also worked as a grocery store manager. Initially he joined the army reserves, but after getting married and starting a family he enlisted in the United States Army. The first few years he was a drill sergeant and also became an expert rifleman. He then moved into electronics, working on various radar sites and missile programs. He developed new defense systems during Vietnam War. He did several tours overseas in Germany, Kwajalein, and Korea. Photography and making shell jewelry was also one of his hobbies. He retired 1979 in Pensacola as Chief Warrant Officer W3. He began his dream and passion for plants. He started his “Green Garden Nursery” where he spent countless hours working. The last week of his life, he was planning his fall garden. He could not walk by a house plant without pulling out his pocket knife and trimming off dead leaves. He always said he wanted people to remember “that he liked to grow things”. Bob is survived by his four children: Dennis Mills, Sharon Azzarello, Scott Mills, and Karen Carr. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Daniel Mills, Anna Driggers, Christine Hattaway, Vincent Azzarello, and Rachel Carr. He also has five great grandchildren: Alana and Jaiden Driggers, Aiden Mills, and Gracie and Kaylee Hattaway. Lastly, he is survived by his two cats, “sammie” and “sassy”. We will all miss you! Love you Dad! Visitation will be held Thursday July 7th, from 5-8 pm at Faith Chapel NORTH on Highway 29. Funeral Services will be held at Faith Chapel SOUTH, Beverly Pkwy, Friday July 8th, at 8:30 am with interment to follow at Barrancas National Cemetery.
