Robert "Detroit Bob" W. Brewis

Robert W. Brewis, 84, of Gulf Breeze, FL, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2015, after courageously fighting a two year battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Through his powerful outreach and use of the 12 Step program, Detroit Bob is credited with helping many, many people achieve sobriety in the Pensacola community. He was the model for conquering addiction, having been sober and active in Alcoholics Anonymous for more than 52 years. On December 15, 2015, Bob would have celebrated his 53rd year of sobriety, where he would have shared his favorite advice, "Don't take the first drink"! Following Bob's retirement from the US Postal Service, Bob and his wife, Edith, enrolled as art students in local schools and studios. Bob pursued this hobby with unstoppable enthusiasm creating numerous still life and streetscape oil paintings. In fact, he was particularly proud of selling one of his paintings as recently as 6 months ago. After placing his easel and oil painting supplies in storage, Bob was recruited to occupy the enviable, high pressure position as Chief of Delivery of Technical Information for the Blue Wahoos aka Head Scorekeeper. Blue Wahoos' fans could always rely on Bob's dedication. He did not miss a single home game until the obstacles associated with his illness forced his reluctant retirement during the Blue Wahoos fourth consecutive season. A Korean War Air Force veteran, Bob is survived by his wife of 32 years, Edith (Edye) Brewis, as well as 5 children and 1 stepson: Clifford Brewis and his wife, Karen; Charlene Brewis; Christopher Brewis, and his wife, Debbie; Craig Brewis; Peter Brewis, and his wife, Melinda; and, Brian K. Spencer, and his wife, Crystal. Visitation and viewing will begin 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, 75 Fairpoint Drive, Gulf Breeze, FL, followed by a memorial service that will begin at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Pathways For Change, 2050 W. Blount St., Pensacola, FL 32501. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Bob's physician and friend, Dr. Paul Tamburro, and his end of life caregiver, Shari Sankeralli of Emerald Coast Hospice. Finally, there is simply not enough available space to identify the many people of Detroit Bob's AA Family that filled the final months of Bob's limited mobility with daily interaction and inspiration.
