Richard Monroe Powers Sr

Richard Monroe Powers, Sr. passed away peacefully after several years of courageously battling illness, and went to be God on January 24, 2025 at the age of 78. Richard was born in Greenville, AL on January 10, 1947, the son of William M. Powers, Sr, and Dorthy G. Powers. He was Catholic by faith. He graduated in 1965 from Escambia High School, Pensacola FL, and immediately enlisted in the United States Army. Richard was a Green Beret, Specialist 4th Class, and served in the Vietnam War. While serving, he earned a National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, and Sharpshooter (Rifle M-16) designation. After he was honorably discharged, Richard served with the Pensacola City Police Department for fifteen years. He was a SWAT member. He medically retired in 1994, due to an injury received in the line of duty. Richard married Mary in 1989, while they both worked with the Pensacola City Police Department, she was a Dispatcher. They were happily married for 36 years. Richard enjoyed deep sea fishing, golfing, birdwatching and finding treasures with his metal detector. He volunteered with St. Roberts Catholic Church in Atmore, AL. and served on the Parish Council. Richard was an enthusiastic sports fan and would never miss watching his teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and Auburn University, play football. Richard is preceded in death by his parents, William M Powers, Sr. and Dorthy G. Powers; his sisters; Dorthy "Angie" Wolf, and Annett "Nettie" Fairey. Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Helen Powers, son Richard M. Powers, Jr. (Jessica), stepdaughters Lori Potts (Jimmie) and Enid Wilson, brother Robert Powers (Pamela), sister Virginia Gamewell (Steven), and his nephews and nieces. Also, his much-loved grandchildren Trey Potts (Kelsey), Justin Potts (Brooklyn), Jacob Wilson (Marina), Joshua Wilson, Nicole Powers, Bailee Powers Steward, Ronin Powers, Hunter Wilson, and his five precious great-grandchildren, which entertained him when they visited. A service will be held on Monday, February 3, 2025, at Faith Chapel North, 1000 S Highway 29, Cantonment, FL. Visitation will begin at 11:30 and the service will start at noon. Interment will immediately follow the service at Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola, FL.
