Obituary for Roy James Strickland
Roy J. Strickland passed away on the morning of November 9th, 2020 at the age of 88. He was born in Holmes County on March 24, 1932. He graduated from Holmes County High School in 1951. Roy and his loving, devoted wife Maxine were married on September 25, 1951 and spent 69 wonderful years together. He joined the Air Force in November of 1952. Roy worked as an Iron Worker until his retirement in 1994. Roy will be remembered for being a loving dad and grandfather. A man of strong will, he was fondly referred to as “Mr. Strick” and “Coach” by many of his softball girls. He himself was an ardent softball player with the Senior League of Pensacola. He was a loyal member of the International Trade Union and Iron Workers Local 798, working all over the country. Fishing with friends and playing poker at the American Legion 340 were his favorite things to do after retirement. He was of Baptist faith and belonged to Moose Lodge #557. He is preceded in death by his father, Walt Strickland; mother, Minnie Retherford Strickland; father-in-law, Wilbur Lee Maxwell; mother-in-law, Mary Autney Maxwell; sister, Margie Bishop; and brothers, Ted Strickland and Ray Strickland. Roy is survived by his wife of 69 years, Maxine Strickland; son, Jeff Strickland; four daughters, Kim Little, Kelly Lambeth, Kristy (Carl) Miller and Angelia Miller; eight grandchildren, Mandy, Jeffrey, MacKenzie, Austin, Colin, Rhyan, Keeli, and Trey; eight great grandchildren, Mitchell, Lexi, Felisha, Savannah, Ashton, Bella, Hannah, and Valeri; one great great grandchild, Raelyn; and three sisters, Betty Taylor, Marie Robertson, and Annette (Ken) Atkinson. Memorial services will be held at 3PM, on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North. The family will receive friends at 2PM prior to services.
