Joan Louise Young

Joan Louise (Zinsmeister) Young was the second born of six children to Joseph Eldon Zinsmeister and Dorotha Elizabeth Zinsmeister in Bippus, Indiana on December 29, 1939. She passed away peacefully and met her Lord and Savior at 1:30am February 12, 2021. Her strong will and fiery spirit helped her battle a nearly 2 year fight with breast cancer, COPD and dementia. Known as Jody, Jo-Jo, Gramma Jo-Jo and Mighty-Jo lived up to her endearing names and strong character. Joan is preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Young, her parents Joseph and Dorotha Zinsmeister, two brothers James Zinsmeister and Andrew Sutton, two sisters, Ethel Marie Steffen and Mary Ellen Scheiber, plus Grandparents and several Aunts and Uncles, one nephew and one niece. Joan is survived by her son Jeffrey Young (Milton, Fl), daughter Terri Rivera and spouse Richard Rivera (Dallas, Tx); grandchildren Becka Davis and Luke Rivera, son Steven Young and spouse Linda Young (Monkton, Md); grandchildren Ryan Young, Lauren Young, Connor Young and MacKenzie Young; she is also survived by her brother Carl Zinsmeister and sister Nancy Sutton, along with 12 nieces and nephews residing in Indiana, Illinois, Alabama, California and Idaho. As an industrious farmer's daughter, Joan talked fondly of milking the cows, helping with other chores and growing up in a loving and full house. Joan graduated from Bippus High School, near Huntington, Indiana, in 1956. She then went on to Business college for 2 years. It is during this time that she met and fell in love with her one and only husband, Robert Arthur Young of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. They then began a life as a career Navy family - moving to Oahu, Hawaii in 1959; Columbus Ohio in 1963; Brunswick, Georgia 1965; Chula Vista, California 1966; Madison, Wisconsin 1968; Chula Vista, California 1970; Alexandria, Virginia 1973; Pensacola, Florida 1977. After raising 3 children, and being an integral, supportive part of their school and extra-curricular activities, Joan began a 23 year career in 1975 with the U.S. Government Civil Service reaching the level of GS-12 in 1996. She was a valuable and loyal employee earning work related awards and accolades. Joan and her husband, Robert, were loyal active members of many Lutheran churches throughout their assigned naval duty stations. Joan and Robert were active members of Our Redeemer Lutheran church, Warrington, Florida from 1977-2005. They then moved to McKinney, Texas in 2005 and became members of Our Savior Lutheran Church until 2017 when Joan moved back to the Pensacola, Florida area and became a member (with her son, Jeffrey Young), of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Pensacola, Florida. Joan was a dedicated Christian woman with strong moral, ethical and social values, based on her strong faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She passed these values and faith on to her loving children and grandchildren. Joan was very involved with church volunteer activities and bible study groups. She also loved to play volleyball as a teenager, played the trumpet in the high school band, played adult softball, coached a high school girls softball team, was a long time member of a golf league, enjoyed traveling, playing the piano, loving on her grandchildren, nieces, nephews and visiting family in the Midwest. She was a loyal, dependable, spirited friend to all those she met. She loved people and having fun! Her legacy will live on as she was an example of many beautiful, faith driven words of wisdom and hope to all of her family and friends. There will be a memorial service at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 6305 N. Blue Angel Parkway, Pensacola, Fl 32526; 850-944-3777 - at 10am on Saturday, February 27, 2021. Visitation will be from 9am-10am on that same day, Feb 27 at the church.
