Hargis V. Harris

Hargis V. Harris, age 90, of Pensacola, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday July 25, 2020. A longtime resident of South Point, Ohio, Hargis was born February 24, 1930 in Shelby, Kentucky to the late Ola Venters Goff and James P. Harris. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Douglas Hylton and Paul Blake Hylton, and his step-father Henry Goff. Hargis served in the US Air Force during the Korean War. Following his time in the military, Hargis resumed what became a forty-five year career with CSX Transportation. He worked his way from a steam engine fireman to superintendent of transportation of the Russell, KY yard, where he retired in 1992. Hargis was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of South Point, where he served many years as deacon and later as deacon emeritus. Known for his love for God and country, strong work ethic, and servant spirit, Hargis was most proud of his family. Married sixty-one years to the love of his life, he modeled what a loving, godly, and committed husband should be. His children were loved and cherished by a father who put his family first and exemplified how to give graciously, live humbly, and follow Christ passionately. Hargis gave his family many memories of a life well lived and how to “run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:1,2). Hargis is survived by his wife Athalene Hamilton Harris; one son Jim (Beth) of Pensacola, FL; one daughter Josette (Rob) Hatley of Covington, LA; and three beloved grandchildren: Samuel, Emma, and Frances Hatley. He will also be missed by countless extended family and friends. Anyone who knew Hargis will remember him fondly each time we see a train, wave an American flag, eat dessert, travel to a new destination, or hear anyone say, “You need anything?” He has left a deep and abiding legacy for those who follow in his footsteps, and we are all changed for the better for knowing him. Funeral service and celebration of life will be held Friday, July 31 at 1:00pm CST at Olive Baptist Church, 1836 Olive Road, Pensacola FL, with visitation from noon-1:00pm. Burial will follow at Bayview Memorial Park. Dr. Ted Traylor and Pastor Mike Dimick will officiate the services.
