Glyn Richard Holmes

“You know when you're young you think you will always be. As you become more fragile, you reflect, and you realize how much comfort can come from the past.” Glyn Richard Holmes was born on September 30th, 1946, in Portland, Oregon to Glyn and Theda Fowler Holmes and was relieved of his duty on May 28th, 2023, in Tallahassee, Florida. Richard graduated from Central High School, in Little Rock Arkansas in 1964. He also attended Little Rock University for a short time, before commissioning into the Navy in 1966. Richard met his wife, Donna through a mutual friend, while Donna dated a friend of Richard’s and Richard dated a friend of Donna’s. Once Donna and Richard found that the two of them were meant to be together, they married-on May 29, 1966, and after having two boys, Richard Michael and James Paul, their family was complete. When Richard commissioned into the Navy, he spent his time serving his country and loving his wife and children. Richard was stationed in North Carolina, moved to South Carolina, then NAS Millington, Tennessee, and then headed south to Jacksonville, Florida, where he served on the USS Koelsch (FF-1049) and made his way to Baltimore, Maryland, before turning around and heading to New Orleans, Louisiana. Richard then headed west to San Diego, California and graduated from The George Washington University as a Physician Assistant. Once graduated, Richard headed back to Little Rock, Arkansas to pick up Donna, Mike, and Paul, and head to Pensacola, Florida. Once in Pensacola with his family, Richard was still in the United States Navy until 1986, where he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 which is also where he retired as a Physicians Assistant. From there, Richard began to sell insurance with Modern Woodmen of America where he worked until he retired in 2020. In 2007, Donna, Richard’s wife passed away and he made a vow to be apart of his children and their families lives, because that is what Donna would have wanted. Richard enjoyed being with his sisters and brother, Karen, Randy, and Janis and often was looking out for them as their older brother and protecting them. Richard also enjoyed fishing, hunting, spending time with his children and grandchildren and hosting big 4th of July vacations at his house, where he took the role as “supportive PawPaw” cheering on the pool volleyball game. Richard was a father of two, a grandfather of eight, and a great-grandfather of six. Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Glyn Holmes and Theda Fowler Holmes, wife, Donna Holmes, granddaughter, Ashleigh Holmes, and great-grandson, Brayden Pistole. Richard is survived by his son, Mike Holmes (Susan) of Tallahassee, FL and Paul Holmes (Melody) of Pensacola, FL. His grandchildren Zach Holmes (Chelsea), Brantley Thompson (Trent), Makenzie Steverson (Thomas), Jackson Holmes, Garrett Holmes (Alexis), Summer Lindsey, and Whittnie Merlau. Great-Grandchildren are Myles Steverson, Olivia Thompson, Eli Thompson, Maisie Steverson, and Aubrie Holmes. He is survived by his sister Karen Jackson (Percy) of Little Rock, Arkansas, brother Randy Holmes (Barbara), of Little Rock, Arkansas, and sister Janis Webb (Bobby) of Benton, Arkansas. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and cousins. Funeral Services will be Monday, June 5, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North. Visitation will be one hour before at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola.
