Duane Donald Mullen

Retired Navy Master Chief Duane D. “Moon” Mullen, age 86, of Pensacola Fl., passed peacefully June 22, 2021 with his family by his side. He is preceded in death by his father Donald Mullen, mother Elizabeth Mullen, and his son-in-law Joel Sartain. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Catherine Mullen, sister Shirley Johnson, brother Russell Mullen. Daughters Terry Sartain, Fay Stokes (Steve), sons David Mullen (Sandi), and Patrick Mullen (Rene’). Grandchildren Christopher Sartain (Nicole), LCDR Brandon Sartain (LCDR Kara), Briana Wigley (David), Stefanie Forte (Joseph), Duane Mullen (Jacqueline), Amanda Clark (AF Major Bart), Shawn Mullen, DMD (fiancé Cami), Chelsi Mullen, Nici Mullen, 11 Great Grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Duane, the eldest of three children, was born in Edinburg, PA and attended Union High School, New Castle, PA where he enjoyed four years with F.F.A., three years with the school chorus, and put on a grand performance as Ed in the senior play ‘You Can’t Take It With You’. He joined the Navy right out of High School, and his first duty station was Electronic Test at NAS Patuxent River, MD where he met the love of his life, Catherine Ann. They shared a mutual love of dancing to the likes of Roy Clark and Patsy Cline, which blossomed into a life of 65 wonderful years together. Duane was proud of his 30 years of service in the U.S. Navy and enjoyed his tour of duty as it took him to places such as California, Illinois, Japan, and Florida. He was well respected in his field and made many lifelong friends along the way. After his transition to civilian life Duane continued to work in aviation with TMC, tracking service intervals for military aircraft. He re-retired after 15 years to travel with Catherine. Trips they enjoyed include a train ride to California, travel to Alaska, and a trip to Jerusalem, along with his many trips to Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Illinois to visit family. His favorite past time was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Duane spent many hours ensuring his family was well taken care of. Always ready to lend a hand he also became known as the neighborhood handy man. Services will be held Thursday, July 1, 2021 at Faith Chapel Funeral Home on Beverly Parkway. Visitation will start at 11:30 am with services to follow at 12:30 pm. Interment, with full military honors, will be at Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola NAS, at 2:00 pm. A life celebration will follow at a location to be determined. Pall Bearers will be his grandsons. The family would like to thank the medical staff at Sacred Heart Cancer Center and Covenant Care for their tender care of Duane during his illness. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Pensacola NAS Aviation Museum, Covenant Care, or a charity of your choice.
