Charles Warner Whatley

Charles “Charlie” Warner Whatley 1923-2017 Charles “Charlie” W. Whatley went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 3, 2017. He was born on June 8, 1923, in Lanett, AL to Dr. and Mrs. Willie C. Whatley. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Cooper Whatley and Dr. Thomas Whatley; and his grandson, Joshua McMillon. He graduated from Emma Samson High School at the age of 16. He enrolled at Alabama Polytech now known as Auburn University working as a co-op student to pay for his education. Interrupting college in 1943 Charlie joined the Army Air Corps, went to Navigation School, and was commissioned as a Second Lt. He was a navigational instructor for B-24’ s. Honorably discharged, he returned to college and in 1947 finished his degree in Chemical Engineering. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, Phi Lambda Upsilon and Alpha Phi Omega. After working for Atlantic Refinery in Brownsville, TX for five years, he went to work for Chemstrand. Charlie had a long and successful (33 years) career at the Monsanto Corporation in Sand Mt., AL; Decatur, AL; St. Louis, MO; Europe; and finally settled in Pensacola in 1972. He was Chairman of the Preproject Board studying expansion of Monsanto’s Acrilan fiber capacity in England and Europe. In 1969, he met the love of his life, Gail Halbert Whatley, and this past June they celebrated 47 years of marriage. He is also survived by his son, Rod (Lisa) Whatley of Florence, AL, his son, Gordon (Sue) Whatley of Trinity FL, his daughter, Jacque (Chris) Wilson of Memphis, TN; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Charlie was always a true southern gentleman and admired by many. He was a multi-talented man, supervising the building of many homes and investment properties. His last project was overseeing the construction of his dream lake house on Smith Lake, AL at the age of 80. It was nicknamed “Haven of Rest”. Before the ravages of Alzheimers, he was a faithful member and supporter of the Campus Church serving as campus parent to many of the Pensacola Christian College students. He also enjoyed entertaining friends, playing golf, reading, traveling and cheering on his Auburn Tigers. Many thanks of appreciation are extended to Pastor McBride and Pastor Burdick for their many visits and prayers, to Brenda and Ed Creel who went beyond the call of duty to help in so many ways, to Jim and Carol Hicks and Doris Whiteside for their many acts of kindness. The family appreciated the kind and compassionate care from Eugenia and Ingrid of Covenant Care Hospice. Visitation will be held Sat., April 8, 2017, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.at Faith Chapel Funeral Home South with the funeral immediately following the visitation. Interment will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery on Monday, April 10, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Pallbearers will be Chuck Craig, Ed Creel, Jim Hicks, Tim McLaughlin, Tyler McMillon and Austin Whatley. In lieu of flowers donations can be made of Rejoice in the Lord T.V., Rejoice Broadcast or Covenant Care Hospice.
