Lieutenant Commander (ret) Richard R. “Dick” Roberts, 88, of Pensacola, Florida, passed away on September 18, 2017. Dick was born October 12, 1928 in Jonesboro, Indiana to Roy and Lorene Roberts. At age 17, after living most of his life with his grandparents, Ira and Mary Keim, Dick joined the Navy becoming part of the occupation forces following WWII. Following a distinguished career and 26 years of active duty, he retired from the Navy in 1971 and moved to Pensacola, Florida. There, Dick started his second career working for Runyan shipyard as quality assurance manager until his retirement in 1987. But in reality, Dick never really retired as every hobby was approached with the same dedication and professionalism. He was an avid photographer from his home photography lab; a golfer and expert golf club maker with custom sets made for many local golfers; founding member and President of the Woodham High School Booster Club; and a Deacon, Elder and Board Chairman of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where he was a member since 1975. Sports were a big part of Dick’s life. In the Navy, he was a champion boxer and world class pitcher of fast pitch softball. Dick then became teacher and passed his knowledge to his three children and grandchildren, where he loved attending the many basketball, football and baseball games that would follow. He played softball, golf and bowling for many years thereafter, along with becoming a faithful New Orleans Saints fan. Dick is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Sue Roberts; three sons, Robin, Rich and Randall Roberts; four grandchildren, Lauren Roberts, Jordan Roberts, Allison Roberts Hall and Rachel Munoz; and four great grandchildren, Jensen Roberts, Lilliana Anderson, Ava and Ryan Roberts. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 6031 Goodrich Drive, Pensacola, Florida 32504 with Reverend George Dudley officiating. Interment will take place at Barrancas National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. prior to services. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)-Memorial Fund.
