John “Jack” Franklin Murray, 83, of Pensacola passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2011. He was born on January 20, 1928 in Brockton, MA, the son of John F. Murray and Marion Richardson Murray. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving for 20 years and retiring in 1964 as a Chief Petty Officer. He again retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1993 after 28 years. He married Louise Gilbert Poole on January 27, 1950 in Boston, MA. Jack and Louise raised their four children in Pittsfield, MA and after retirement moved to Pensacola in 1994. During his naval service he was stationed in Spain, Philadelphia and Newfoundland and aboard the U.S.S. Aucilla, the U.S.S. Shangri-La and U.S.S. Huntington. He served under then Capt. Arleigh Burke and participated in the Atomic Bomb testing at Bikini Atoll. Mr. Murray was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Gilbert Murray and a daughter, Maureen Nettles of Pittsfield, MA. He is survived by his two daughters, Elaine Borden of Pittsfield, MA and Brenda Murray of Germantown, MD and a son, John J. Murray (Kelly) Murray of Gulf Breeze, FL. He leaves seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He enjoyed fishing, golf, gardening and spending time at the beach. A Memorial service will be held at Faith Chapel Funeral Home South on Monday, October 24 at 10:00 a.m. with a visitation one hour prior to the memorial service. Commitment at Barrancas Cemetery with full military honors will follow at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Regency Hospice, 4900 Bayou Blvd #101, Pensacola, FL 32503-2543. The family wishes to acknowledge Dr. Boden, Keri, Peggy, Tina, and Cindy and the other staff of Regency Hospice for the special care that was given.
