Dorothy 'June' Young

Dorothy “June” Young, age 88 of Gulf Breeze, Florida went to be with the Lord Thursday, November 3, 2011. June was born December 3, 1922, in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, to Ike and Lavenia Paty and into a family of eight children. In 1941, she graduated salutatorian from Webb School, a prestigious male college preparatory school in Bell Buckle. While attending Webb School, she was the only female enrolled. She was an excellent tennis player and liked to boast of defeating all of her male challengers there at the school. June attended Birmingham Southern University where she met her beloved husband William “Bill” T. Young II. Bill fondly called her “June Bug.” While attending Birmingham Southern, she was accepted into Eastern Airlines as a stewardess, but instead accepted a marriage to Bill. During WWII, prior to attending college, both June and Bill served in the US Navy. During the war, June also worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory while the atomic bomb was being developed. June had a passion for literature and poetry and a remarkable gift for reciting poems, which she did regularly in her Sunday school class as a member of Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church. She developed her passion for poetry while attending Webb School. She had the honor of meeting Robert Frost and getting his autograph while visiting her class. Her favorite poem was “If” by Rudyard Kipling. The poem reflects on June’s character; how she lived her life and as a devoted mother, the advice and encouragement she gave her children. June was a sweet gentle soul, with a smile that would warm you. June, Bill and their four children moved to Gulf Breeze from Decatur, Alabama in 1960, when Bill was transferred there while employed as a fishery biologist with the US Bureau of Commercial Fisheries. June was the first female mail carrier for the Gulf Breeze Post Office. She also served as a teacher’s aide and librarian assistant at Gulf Breeze High School. June is preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Bill Young; her parents, five sisters and two brothers. Survivors include daughters, Beverly Bogan, Gayle Nobles and Lynette Dewberry Stafford (Terry Stafford); son, William “Bill” T. Young lll; grandsons, Bryan Scott Nobles, Dustin Austin Service, Geoffrey Eugene Freeman, and Joseph Michael Dewberry, Jr.; and great granddaughters, Kaelyn Morgan Nobles, Audrey Justin Service, and Hannah Leigh Freeman. The Celebration of June’s life will be on Monday, November 14, 2011 at Faith Chapel Funeral Home South. Visitation from 12:00 – 1:00 pm and service at 1:00 pm Interment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery.
