Obituary for Charles Drew Scales

Charles D. Scales
1926 – 2018

Charles Drew Scales, 92, passed away on December 4, 2018. Survivors include his son Don, who resides in New York City, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Born in Fairfax, AL in 1926, Charles was the youngest sibling with two brothers - George and Jim, and one sister, Jessie. He graduated from Valley High School, 1944; he was an integral part of the football team as a star Running Back. During this World War II period, Charles was drafted as an eighteen year old into the U.S. Army (24th Cavalry) and served in Europe with the Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron operating as Advanced Scouts to send tactical information regarding enemy strategies. One of the memorable periods was the Battle of the Bulge.
After the war, Charles returned home and became involved with several entrepreneurial ventures in the 1940’s. In 1951, he married the “Love of his Life,” Hazel Daniels, his high school Sweetheart and enjoyed 64 years of marriage before her death in 2016.
For over thirty years, Charles worked for the U. S. Government in Civil Service in the field of electronics. He “planned” his life well by working, saving, and investing for that “rainy day.” Hazel, a well known educator, and he planned their future to retire at same time; they both retired the same day in June, 1985. During their next chapter, they enjoyed travel, gardening, and special hobbies.
Charles will be remembered – not only for his sense of humor, mechanical and electrical acumen, fishing, playing poker with his neighborhood buddies, love for chess – but also as a devoted husband, father, and friend. Proud to be a veteran!
The family will receive friends for visitation from 8:30 – 9:30 AM on Monday, December 10th, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home, 100 Beverly Parkway. The Service, officiated by Chaplain Fred Zobel, USN (Ret.), will begin at 9:30 AM. Burial will follow at the Barrancas National Cemetery. The family would like to extend thanks to the Patriot Guard for special services..
