Obituary for Caroline Elizabeth Hayes Yearty

Caroline Elizabeth Hayes Yearty, 90, Pensacola, FL; formally of Sylvan Springs, AL, and Loxley, AL; died January 9, 2019. She was admired for her expertise and guidance as school administrator and teacher’s assistant at middle schools in the Birmingham school system. Her departed soul leaves us to continue her legacy of an overwhelming sense of hospitality to ALL, and quiet -but positive- leadership by example.
A paragon of the greatest, she was a master gardener, especially in her rose garden, and a wonderful homemaker and hostess for many gatherings of family and friends. Everyone was welcome at her home and she would always make a place at the table, somehow stretching whatever she was serving to accommodate all who were there.
As a former member of Trinity Episcopal Church, West End, AL; St. John’s Episcopal Church, Ensley, AL; St. John’s Episcopal Church, Robertsdale, AL; and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Daphne, AL; her ministries included Sunday school teacher, vestry positions, and women’s service groups, but most of all she loved being a part of the alter guild for over 60 years caring for the vessels of worship and placing beautiful flowers on the table.
She is survived by her sister Rebecca Fredricks, Kingston, TN; two children, Robert Clifford Jr. (Linda Leo) and Mary Elizabeth Yearty-Meek (Ronnie); three granddaughters, Saundra Thorson (Rob), Niceville, FL; Laura Young (Adam) and Sarah Seymour (Larry), Tallahassee, FL: two step-grandsons, Christopher Dekle (Michelle), Birmingham, AL; Robert Merritt (Shannon) Port Orange, FL; 14 great-grandchildren, each of whom gave her great pride; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Leon and Esther Hayes, sister Margaret Hill and her husband Robert (Budge).
Following a three months courtship and 69 years of marriage; now four years after his passing – our Mom and Dad have been re-united forever. Together they inspired several generations to have determination, perseverance, and to do your best. In the 1960s they were “2nd parents” and mentors to many West End High School students in Birmingham, AL.
Thanks and blessings from her family to Covenant Hospice and all those on the Alzheimer’s Care Team at Homestead Village Pensacola for the wonderful and respectful care they provided during the final years of Mom’s life. Memorial donations may be made in her name to Alzheimer’s research or hospice care facility.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 15, 2019 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church with the funeral service at 12. Interment will be at Barrancas National Cemetery.
FAITH CHAPEL FUNERAL HOME SOUTH is entrusted with the arrangements. You may express your condolences online at www.fcfhs.com
