Billy-Ace "Penguin" Baker Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Billy-Ace "Penguin" Baker, Chief Petty Officer, USN (Ret), died in his home after a tough battle with cancer in the early morning hours of July 3, 2022. He was born in 1936 in Oklahoma City, OK, to Asa and Goldie Baker. His career with the Navy took him around the world, with duty locations in New Zealand, Guam, California, Washington, and Antarctica. He had a great love for Antartica ("The Ice"). He was the glue that held all of those who had been to Antartica together for decades before the ease of social media. He "wintered-over” multiples times! He worked in McMurdo (Deep Freeze) from 1964-1980. He enjoyed collecting Antartic books (filling an entire home library) and memorabilia. After a 32-year career, he retired with his family in Pensacola, FL. He was a complex thinker with an incredible sense of humor. He was an amazing storyteller. You would never know where the truth ended and the intricate fiction of his mind began. He would share stories and ponder the room. He relished in his memories of being on The Ice and all of his shenanigans. He was truly larger than life. Billy-Ace was preceded in death by his loving wife, Florence, son, Jamie Baker, brother, Walter, and sisters, Zola and Maxine (known to her as Bidillous). He is survived by his son, Sean Baker, and daughter, Kerry Konrad. He was blessed with three grandchildren, Ashlee Baker, Robert Konrad, and Bradley Konrad. He loved Daniel as his own grandchild, too. He remained very close with his younger brother, Richard Baker (wife DeAnn), throughout his lifetime. He held his extended family in New Zealand (Amanda, Tina, Sharon, and their children) very close to his heart. He was a great friend to many people. Funeral services will be held at Faith Chapel Funeral Home located at 100 Beverly Parkway, Pensacola, FL, on Monday, July 25, 2022, at 10:00 a.m., with procession immediately following to Barrancas National Cemetery for a graveside service to be joined with his loving wife, Florence. Billy-Ace has asked, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital on his behalf.
