Thomas Jeffery Garteiser

Thomas J. Garteiser, 79, long term resident of Pensacola, died October 17th at a local hospital. He was the husband of Margaret Miller Garteiser. They shared 54 years of marriage. Born April 9, 1941 in Hondo, TX, he was the son of Bertha and Thomas Louis Garteiser. The family later moved to Kingsville, TX where he graduated from W.B. Ray High School. Shortly after graduating he proudly enlisted in the US Army and served as a combat medic stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. After his tour of duty, he settled in Pensacola, FL and married the love of his life, Margaret Ann Miller on January 29, 1966. They had three children: Michelle, Jeff, and Randall. He worked at Naval Aviation Depot at NAS Pensacola for 33 years. After retiring, he and Margaret enjoyed traveling in their RV and visiting family as well as numerous National Parks. His hobbies included scouting, boating, repairing small engine parts, and playing horseshoes with his friends. He was very proud of his children’s accomplishments and that they all three attained engineering degrees with Randall obtaining his Juris Doctorate Degree with honors. He commented numerous times that they got the “smart gene” from their mother. However, those that knew him well can contest to his personal accomplishments and incredible capabilities despite a formal education. He will be remembered first and foremost by his love and dedication to his wife Margaret. As her health declined over the past 15 years, he was her primary caregiver and never once complained nor wanted to burden anyone else with this responsibility. This dedication should be an example for others to follow. His epitaph will read “He helped others and asked little in return.” This is the legacy he leaves behind. In addition to three children, he is survived by two grandchildren, one great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be missed but not forgotten. We love you Dad.
