Susan Jan Sherrer

Susan Jan Sherrer, 70, a resident of Perdido Key, Florida for over 25 years, departed this life on Thursday, January 7th, 2021 unexpectedly by natural causes at her home. Susan Jan Sherrer, better known as “Suzy Q” was born November 5th, 1950 to parents Aubrey Clinton and Annie Mae Sherrer. She was the youngest of 5 children, all born in Langdale, Alabama, a small Cotton Mill community along the Chattahoochee River on the border of Alabama and Georgia. Around age 3, the family moved to Cantonment, Florida, where Suzy lived throughout her youth. She was a 1968 graduate of J.M. Tate High School. After high school, Suzy moved to Pensacola, Florida where she was a resident for over 20 years. It was here where she married her former spouse, Robert W. Zaleski with whom she had her only child, Shane Zaleski. At this time, she worked for over 15 years at the Pensacola Naval Air Station at the Mustin Beach Officers Club. Suzy would spend her summers on the beach, for she had a great love for the island lifestyle. Through friendships she made at the Officers Club, later in life she moved to Perdido Key where she became a loyal employee at the famous Flora-Bama for over 25 years. Suzy became the face of the Flora-Bama in the front bar and her smile never failed to light up the room. She always had a way of making guests feel at home and found meaning in life by helping others. Her voice and laughter will greatly be missed. Suzy made countless friendships throughout her life, many of which she held close to her heart. Dinner with friends was always an occasion she loved to dress up for. She enjoyed going on overnight trips to the casinos and taking Caribbean cruises with her friends. On a beautiful warm and sunny day, she loved putting the top down and going for drives in her convertible. Suzy was a wonderful cook who enjoyed growing her own herb garden and often invited her neighbors over for dinner. She had a huge heart for wildlife, and would feed her critters when they would arrive to her back doorstep scratching for food every night. Suzy’s greatest accomplishment in life was her son, Shane. As a mother, she taught her son the value of self worth, to never give up on your dreams, to always stand up for yourself and the importance of having respect for others. She had a caring heart and would go out of her way to help her family and friends without asking for anything in return. She truly was a special person and her time here on earth will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Susan Sherrer is preceded in death by her loving parents Aubrey Clinton and Annie Mae Sherrer; her infant brother Clenton Lamar Sherrer and infant sister Peggy Ann Sherrer, both of Langdale, Alabama; her brother Joe Donald Sherrer and sister in law Dorothy, of Cantonment, Florida; her sister Linda Annette Sherrer of Cantonment, Florida; and niece Veronica Lynn Campbell of Pensacola, Florida. She is survived by her only child, Robert Shane Zaleski and daughter in law, Michelle Monroe Zaleski of Union, Ohio; three wonderful granddaughters, Fallon Magee Silvola and husband Erik Silvola of St. Petersburg, Florida, Riley Kathryn Zaleski and Abigail Mae Zaleski, both of Union, Ohio; and niece Rene Baggett of Pensacola, Florida and nephew Robin Sherrer. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Joseph Gilchrist, Pat McClellan, John McInnis, Cameron Price, and special friends Charlene Smith and Mark Ainslie. The Celebration of Life will be at 2:00 P.M on Sunday, January 31, 2021 at the Central Church Flora-Bama under the tent at the Flora-Bama, 17401 Perdido Key Drive, Perdido Key, Florida with Pastor Rick Long officiating followed by the reception at 3:00 P.M. at the Flora-Bama.
