Robert William Mitchell

Robert William Mitchell 1920-2013 Robert William Mitchell moved to his eternal home in Heaven on January 15, 2014. Robert was born on Sept. 9, 1920 in Cadillac, Michigan. He enlisted in the US Marines in 1939. He completed boot camp in San Diego, California. He met Mary Ella Williams in 1940 and San Diego and they were married in 1942. God blessed them with one son, Robert II; two daughters, Betty and Janice; four grandsons, Ramon, Ryan, Marcus and Adrian; four great-grandsons, Brayden, Isaiah, Cody and Dakota; and one great-granddaughter, Jamie. Robert served 30 years in the Marines and 20 years with St. Regis Paper Co. as chief draftsman of the Woodlands Division in Pensacola. Robert’s career in the US Marines began in California and took him through Parachute School, Officer Candidate School, World War II in the South Pacific jungles and aboard ship. He served as Machine Gun Platoon Commander in Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Vella Lavella. After this, he spent some time in a hospital in New Zealand and later returned to Camp Pendleton, California as Company Commanding Officer for Advanced Infantry Training from there he was sent to engage in the invasion of Okinawa. After the war ended, he was sent to Japan and Korea from 1951-1953. His duty stations were Camp Pendleton and Camp Elliott in California; Norfolk, Virginia; Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; Tokyo, Japan and the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. He retired as a First Lieutenant after 30 years in the Marines. He moved to Pensacola in 1959 where he joined the Lord’s Army. He served as Treasurer and Board Member at the Pensacola Bible Institute and the Bible Baptist Church. Robert gave his life and loyalty to the Lord Jesus Christ; somewhere in the muddy jungles of the South Pacific, he pledged the oath to serve Jesus, washed in his blood. There will be a memorial service for Robert at the Bible Baptist Church on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 1:00pm. Dr. Ruckman and Pastor Donovan will be conducting the services. The military tribute will be conducted at the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Bible Baptist Mission.
