Richard G. Brewer

Richard G. Brewer, 90, of Pensacola, Florida died Monday July 20, 2015 at University Hills Nursing Home where he had resided for the past two months. Richard was born January 7, 1925 in Akron, Ohio and was the eldest son of Wiley and Ora Brewer. He graduated from high school on June 14, 1943 and was drafted into the U.S. Navy on June 28, 1943. He served on the destroyer escort U.S.S. La Prade , D.E. 409, as a radioman, third class. While serving on the U.S.S. La Prade, he participated in the invasion of the Palau Islands and the Okinawan Campaign. He was awarded the American Area Campaign Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and the Victory Ribbon, World War II. He was discharged from the Navy on March 13, 1946. After the war Richard attended Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas then graduated from Southern California Bible College, Pasadena, California with a degree in theology in 1950. After graduation Richard began working for the Navy Department, first in Mobile, Alabama, then in Pensacola, Florida and retired from the Pensacola NAS Naval Depot in 1987. Richard was a member of the Pensacola First Assembly of God Church where he was active in the Royal Ranger program and organized the church library. He was also a genealogist and enjoyed researching his family history. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Wiley W. Brewer and Ora F. Hill Brewer. Surviving are two sisters: Doris Burrell, of Mountain View, Arkansas; and Nancy Harrington of Castle Rock, Colorado; one brother, David Brewer of Medina, Ohio and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Friday, July 24, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. with the family at Barrancas National Cemetery at Pensacola NAS with Faith Chapel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s memory can be made to the Royal Rangers program at Pensacola First Assembly of God Church, 4301 Bayou Blvd., Pensacola, Florida 32503.
