Oscar "Ollie" Olson

Ollie was born to Pauline Amy Bandel and Oscar John Olson February 26, 1923 in Salt Lake City. He was the 2nd of 7 children. Family was important to Ollie so he joined the Navy at an early age to help support his mother and siblings for several years. Sacrificing love for family and friends continued through his life. It bothered him deeply that his military career kept him from his wife and children. He was a Boiler Tech in the Navy with major courses in Automatic Combustion. He was known as “The Boiler King” and supervised all operations of his crew for ship function and safety. He received Good Conduct, National Defense Award, WW II Victory Medal, American Area, Asiatic Pacific Good Conduct, Philippine Liberation, Asia Clasp, China Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with an Honorable Discharge. He served aboard the US NTC Farragut, USS New Orleans, USS Columbia and the USS Corry. With combined services he retired from the US Air Force after 42 years as a PO1/E-6. Ollie met Janet “Jan” at a local hospital cafeteria and married 5 years later on December 26, 2001 in Bryan, Texas. They joined Bellview Baptist Church where Ollie served as a Deacon. Sunday School, church and activities were important to the Olsons. Ollie invented the go-cart, which his children and grandchildren enjoyed. He also invented a device to let you know when the mail had arrived. Being a modest man, he never applied for these patents. He enjoyed his shop, working outdoors, fishing, family, the beach, children, hot coffee, vanilla ice cream, Dominos and jet skiing. He was athletic, giving, and creative, with a heart of gold. Ollie was preceded in death by his first wife, Erette Stringfellow Olson and one grandchild. He is survived by his devoted wife, Janet Kingston Olson; children, Bonnie (Lewis) Driggers, Pam (Joe) Kimber, Lesa (Dave) Qualls, Mike, Pat, Beverly and Jim Olson; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Our family wishes to thank Dr. Alicia Chen and Dr. Kevin Jones for the care and concern shown to Ollie. We also want to thank our pastor, Dr. Gregory McBride; church Deacons, Roy and Jean O’Brien and our Bellview Baptist Church family and friends for kind acts of cards, visits and prayers. The surprise Birthday Party and buffet meal brought to our home to help celebrate Ollie’s 90th Birthday meant so much to him. He treasured the prayer blanket made especially for him. A special thank you to Covenant Hospice for the professional, yet Christ-like care you gave Ollie and the sensitivity to our needs. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to our local Covenant Hospice in memory of Mr. Olson and to Alzheimer’s research for his long, courageous battles with cancer and Alzheimer’s. A Memorial service will be held Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Bellview Baptist Church, 4750 Saufley Field Road. Friends and family are invited. Although I love you dearly, I could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke my heart to prove to me, He only takes the best.”
