Neal Owen Terry

Neal Owen Terry passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2013, at the age of 83. Neal was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was born in Frisco City, AL, on February 19, 1930, to Spurgeon Dewey and Faytie Lee (Dailey) Terry. His family moved to Monroeville when he was six, and he resided there until he completed high school. Neal lived in Pensacola, FL, at the time of his death and is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Dorothy C. Terry; his children, Leigh Ann (Terry) Bradley and Susan Elise (Terry) Pareigis (spouse, Michael Pareigis) and Neal Owen Terry, Jr.; his grandchildren Michael, David, and Anne Bradley; Jennifer Pareigis; and Jessica Terry; and his brother, Spurgeon Dewey Terry, and sister, Mary Ann Jaye.How do we tell you about Neal? He was an Eagle Scout, a Mason, and an Army 1st Lieutenant and graduated from Auburn University in Chemical Engineering. He began his career in 1957 at Chemstrand using a simple slide rule and “graduated” to a hand-held calculator but always resisted computers. Neal retired 28 years later from Monsanto after having served as a Corporate Engineer and having worked in Pensacola, FL, Greenwood, SC, and St. Louis, MO, while travelling extensively to Luxembourg, Scotland, Germany, and England. His colleagues have called him the finest engineer they ever knew. Neal and Dot were married when they were 18 and 17; they grew up and grew old together and shared a lifetime of experiences. They were at their best when parenting, enclosing a porch, building bookcases, or, in later years, just spending time together. Whether at work or leading a caravan of families on vacation trips, Neal was the man people asked to lead the way. As a dad, Neal taught math, explained science, showed his son how to hunt, and baited hooks for all, when fishing. He used everyday examples to teach important life lessons to his wife and children. He taught his grandchildren to play games, swim, and enjoy Auburn football; he was a grandfather who truly adored them all. Although a private man, those who knew him knew his thoughtfulness and his quick sense of humor. In his life, he worked hard to provide for his family and always made them his top priority.Visitation will be held at 11 am on Friday, October 25, at Faith Chapel North in Cantonment, followed by a funeral service at noon. A military honors service will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery at 2 pm. Donations to Wounded Warrior Project in lieu of flowers would be most appreciated.
