Marvin James Dunaway Jr.

Jim Dunaway, a man of great faith, died on Thursday, March 8, at Covenant Hospice in Pensacola. He is survived by Camille McClellan Dunaway, his wife of 51 years. The two were next door neighbors and sweethearts since middle school in Columbus, Georgia. Him is also survived by daughter, Allison and her daughter Cassidy Camille Dunaway; one son, Marvin James Dunaway III, and his wife, Lori Dunaway and their children, Austin James and Brooklynn Elizabeth, all of Pensacola. In Georgia, he leaves his brother, David (Kay); two sisters-in-law, Cecille McMullen (James) and Betty Greer; and an extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim graduated from Columbus High School and the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). He then served with the Third Armored Division of the US Army as a 2nd Lt. followed by two years in Frankfurt, Germany as a 1st Lt. and then as a Captain in the US Army Reserves. Later, Jim began a long career in insurance with Travelers Insurance and St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance. At the time of his retirement he was a National General Adjuster, dealing with large commercial entities and was a member of the National Adjuster and Structural Engineer Board. Jim and Camille have been very active in First Baptist Church of Pensacola for 26 years. Jim served in many positions of lay ministry. He was a deacon, played the piano for the “Warm Hearts” Sunday School Class which was named after his father, and often played for the pleasure of groups gathered around. He had a warm personality as well as a “warm heart”. Even while enduring a long period of poor health, Jim remained kind and cheerful. His special ministry at church was working at the Samaritan Hands building where he and many others give aid and hope to those in need. Jim was fun, generous, and encourager and he loved his family and friends deeply. If one existed, Jim would surely win the Blue Ribbon for carrying the most flower arrangements in and out of church, fairs and untold other events, all with good humor, for his very active Garden Club wife. His life and legacy are to be admired and emulated. He will be missed here but is right at home with Jesus. Jim’s memorial service will be in Pleitz Chapel at First Baptist Church, Jackson St. Entrance, on Thursday, March 15. Visitation begins at 10:00 AM with the celebration of his life at 11:00 AM. Dr. Barry Howard, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will be at Barrancas National Cemetery. Memorial gifts in Jim’s honor may be sent to SHM 500 N. Palafox St. Pensacola, FL 32501.
