Martin "Marty" Robert Chmura

Martin R. Chmura passed to his eternal reward on August 3, 2018. He was born October 2, 1928, in Columbiana, Ohio and attended Fairfield Centralized School. Upon graduation, Martin enlisted in the US Army where he served in the Signal Corps in Europe during the Second World War. Upon completion of his service, Martin enrolled in Carnegie Institute of Technology (Carnegie Mellon) and received his BS in Chemical Engineering. Martin is survived by Norma Jean Chmura, his loving wife for 52 years, and daughters, Paula Chmura of Pensacola, FL and Jennifer Chmura (married to Tad Egawa) of Sacramento, CA, along with his wonderful granddaughter, Abby Egawa of Sacramento, CA. He was preceded by his first wife, Patricia Cannon Chmura, and their daughter, Katherine Chmura. Martin always felt blessed by the wonderful family God gave him. Martin was a person of wide interests. He enjoyed his professional career which took him to many places, both nationally and internationally. Martin spent the majority of his career with Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., acting as plant manager at the Milton, FL and Pasadena, TX facilities before heading the company’s award-winning safety program in Allentown, PA. During the early part of his career, Martin was instrumental in developing the rocket fuels used in the US Space program today. Martin enjoyed the outdoors including hunting, fishing, boating, and flower gardening. Martin and wife Norma were regular fixtures sailing the Pensacola Bay area for many years after his retirement. Martin especially enjoyed the company of God’s wonderful creatures (numerous cats, dogs, birds, etc.) who shared his life over the years. Martin’s quietly determined spirit and ever-lasting curiosity meant that his life was a continual journey of learning. He inspired his daughters to value education and always do their best. He taught them that accomplishment and humility go hand in hand, and to treat others kindly and with compassion. He could always be depended on to help those in need, be they humans or animals. In lieu of flowers, it was Martin’s request that donations be made to your local food bank. Graveside service will be Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at Barrancas National Cemetery at 12 noon.
