Marie Joyce Capps

Marie Joyce Capps, 85, of Pensacola, Florida, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2024. She was born October 13, 1938, in McKenzie, Alabama. At a young age, Marie met and married the love of her life, with whom she shared a bond that stood the test of time. Together, they welcomed their first daughter, Teresa Marie. Years later, after relocating to Pensacola, their family grew again with the birth of their second daughter, Shonnie. Both daughters were cherished by their devoted parents. In her twenties, Marie’s passion for creativity began to flourish. A self-taught pianist and poet, she found joy in writing poems and playing beautiful melodies. Her love for gospel hymns and classical music filled her home, where she often sang alto. This musical environment inspired her daughters, who proudly followed in her footsteps. Marie was also an accomplished sketch artist who found joy in capturing life’s beauty on paper. Her passion for making others look and feel their best led her to a successful career as a cosmetologist. Outside her professional life, she loved engaging in various crafts, particularly crochet. Though Marie was known for her culinary skills, her family lovingly jokes about the sporadic mishaps, like the occasional burnt dumplings. Her abilities were not confined to the kitchen; she had a remarkable green thumb, nurturing a variety of beautiful flowers and plants. Marie’s legacy is a rich tapestry of creativity, devotion, and joy, indelibly marked by her unique touch. She cherished her family deeply and found endless delight in life's simple pleasures. Marie was preceded in death by husband, John Henry Capps; parents, Winton Henry Vickery and Siney Leonia Black; sister, Lorene Bozeman Wilson; sister, Glenda Sue Stallings, and brother, Henry Vickery. Marie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Teresa Marie Glass (Anthony), of Robertsdale, AL; daughter and son-in-law, Shonnie Serena Torres (John), of Orlando, FL; grandchildren, Jacob Torres, John William Torres, Michael Glass, Matthew Glass (Kailin), and two great-grandchildren, Mary Everett and Townsend Parker; sisters, Orene Odom of Andalusia and Carolyn Wilson (Jimmy) of Washington; half-sisters, Linda Gail Newton and Sharon Lynn; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be Saturday, July 6, 2024, at 12:30 PM, at River Falls Baptist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior at 11:30 AM. Ben Stewart will be officiating. Interment will follow in River Falls Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John W. Torres, Matthew Glass, Ronnie Capps, and Randy Capps.
