For almost 7 years Daddy has anxiously awaited the time he would join my Mother in heaven. On July 2, 2013, God, in His infinite wisdom, called Daddy home to join his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, my Mother and his 8 brothers and sisters who predeceased him. He often told people that he was 97 years old and was born in Huxford, Alabama May 10, 1916, when the doctor came in a horse and buggy at 4:00 in the morning. He was of the Greatest Generation who knew how to value a dollar - he never threw anything away, “keep something long enough and you’ll find a use for it”! He knew how to love his country serving in WWII and Korea. He knew how to love and serve his God. He was a Deacon and held many positions at Brownsville Baptist Church and later at Olive Baptist Church. He instilled in his family a love for God and walked a life filled with faith, hope and love. He and mother owned and operated a furniture and antique store until their retirement in the early 1980s. Then they headed out in their motorhome to see this beautiful county. Every year they spent two months fishing on the St. Johns River in Deland, Florida. Malcom loved people and truly never met a stranger. His last years were spent at the University Pines which he called his “heaven on earth”. He loved the Pines and thought everybody should live there. Malcom had the very best doctor in the world – Dr. Amos Prevatt for almost 40 years. The family wishes to thank Dr. Prevatt and his wonderful staff for the years of extra special care and true friendship. He was a proud member of the Masonic Blue Lodge for 70 years. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite. Malcom was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Ervie Cobb Garrett. He is survived by a daughter, Patsy Goolsby and son-in-law, Russell Goolsby, He was extremely proud of his three grandchildren, Mark Goolsby (Debra), Keith Goolsby (Kelly) and Lori Gillen (Richard). He also leaves to cherish his memories 6 great-grandchildren and his baby sister, Cleo Snodgrass of Mobile, along with numerous nieces and nephews. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the nurses and staff of Sacred Heart Hospital and the ER staff for their outstanding care and compassion. We are also grateful to Covenant Hospice for being there for Daddy and the family. Thank you also to our wonderful church family at Olive Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 8, at 11:00 am. Visitation will be from 9:30 am until 11:00 am at Olive Baptist Church. Dr. Ted Traylor and Dr. Jerry Passmore will conduct the service.
