Lorraine Sharp McDowell

Lorraine McDowell died August 10, 2013 at her home. She was protestant by faith and attended Bellview Baptist Church. She was a native of Tennessee, but held deep roots in the community of Escambia County, FL for over 60 years. For more than three decades she was supportive and actively involved in the Fraternal Order of Eagles, an international organization better known as “People helping People.” She was a member of Five Flags Ladies Auxiliary #3483, Fraternal Order of Eagles. She was a past president of her local auxiliary, a past state auxiliary president, and a past southeast regional president of the Grand Auxiliary. She received many awards, honors, and recognitions for the efforts and dedication, along with harmonious cooperations throughout the jurisdiction of Eagledome. She received the Florida State Auxiliary Hall of Fame Award in 2002 and the Alta B. Smith Award in 2013. Health problems compelled her to retreat from fraternal activities for the last two years, but she was often reminiscent of the past. She enjoyed planning fun entertainment and believed in getting the members involved. She was a devoted school room mother for many years. She was also, a den mother for the Boy Scouts for many years. She worked at the Interstate Fair for over forty-five years. She was General Chairperson of the Hobbies department. She was preceded in death by her parents, Z and Bertha Patterson; brothers, Bradley, Sam, Owen and Kimble Patterson; sister, Dixie Patterson Brown; husband, Everette Russell McDowell and son, Jackie Melvin Sharp. She is survived by one son, James “Jim” Russell (Sandra) McDowell; granddaughter, Melissa “Missy” Thomas; grandsons, Joshua Brett and James Russell McDowell, Jr. and Jackie Kevin Cooper; sister, June Archuleta of Annapolis, MD, several great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and many friends. To her family, she was a tower of strength, always able to find the time and energy to work, play, serve and lead, shouldering her share of life’s burdens with unfailing good humor and grace. She loved life and enjoyed sharing much laughter with family and friends. The family will receive friends Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 5:00 p.m.-7:00p.m. at Faith Chapel Funeral Home South. Services will be held Sunday, August 18, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Faith Chapel South with Rev. Bill Flannigan officiating. Burial will be at Pensacola Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ed Page, Sam Young, Buddy Mitchell, Jack Stoakes, James McDowell, Jr. and Kevin Cooper. Honorary pallbearers will be all brothers and sisters of the Fraternal Order of Eagles who may be in attendance. A special thanks goes out to Covenant Hospice and Dr. Wendy Osban and staff.
