Lenice McRee Horne

Lenice Adams McRee was born May 14, 1925 in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Lenice first came to Pensacola, FL at the age of four when her father, who was in the U.S. Navy, was transferred here and lived at Old Warrington which was located on the present site of the Pensacola Naval Air Station in 1929. In 1931 her father returned to sea and her mother moved to Columbus, Ohio. Her first sister Glenna Mae was born at Columbus, Ohio June 6, 1932. Lenice attended the first and second grades in Columbus. In 1933 the family moved back to Pensacola when her father Edgar retired from the Navy. Brother Eugene was born on July 20, 1934 and second sister Pauline on September 20, 1935. They lived on Gulf Beach Highway. Lenice entered the third grade at Pleasant Grove and Hellen Caro was her teacher. In 1938 the family moved to Myrtle Grove. Lenice entered the Myrtle Grove Elementary School in 1938 to complete her eighth grade and entered J.B. Lockey School on Gregory and C Streets. Here she completed the ninth grade and moved to Pensacola High School on Lee Square, North Palafox Street. Her very first job other than babysitting was working at the J.J. Newberry Five and Dime Store on Saturdays. The pay was $2.00 per day – two cents was taken from the check for Social Security. She rode the bus into work on Saturdays for a dime each way. In 1942 she took a job at a men’s clothing store and uniform shop as a cashier. The pay was $3.00 per day plus 35 cents for supper. After work she would walk one block to the USO for dancing in her high heel shoes. Her mother and Violet Caro were chaperones for the dances and she could get a ride home with the Caro daughters Mary, Viola and Betty Jane thus saving a bus fare of 10 cents. When Lenice graduated from PHS in June 1943 she had the opportunity to work for Fisher-Brown Insurance Company and worked there until 1949. She married Frank S. Horne on April 12, 1947. Her first child, Janice Lynn Horne, was born on November 9, 1949. Her second child, Joan Lenice Horne, was born on May 17, 1952. Lenice joined First United Methodist Church (FUMC) of Pensacola in the spring of 1938 at which time the minister was Dr. Fletcher McLeod. Lenice was always busy with her family and friends and worked in the Sunday School at FUMC, teaching Sunday School for 30 years. She also taught vacation bible school two weeks each summer and six weeks of Mission School in January and February on Sunday Evening. She taught in all departments but her favorite was the third grade. After this she moved into the adult department and lead the discussion Bible class (The Roundtable Class) for five years. Lenice was also a charter member of the Louise Lipscomb Sunday School class which was organized in 1951. She served as President of the United Methodist Women for two years and also held many offices within the organization. She was chairman of the membership committee of the church for one year, the historical committee for one year, served on the nominating committee three years and the staff/parish committee for three years. She also served as President of the Lipscomb Class as well as Vice President, secretary, program leader and served as class historian. She joined PEO in 1965. This is a philosophical and educational organization which gives grants and loans to women deserving an education. She served as President, Vice President, secretary, chaplain and friend. Both of her daughters are active members. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Library, 6 East Wright Street, Pensacola, FL 32501 in Lenice’s memory. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Faith Chapel Funeral Home South from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. A Memorial service will be Friday, July 20, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Pensacola. Private interment will be held at Bayview Memorial Park Cemetery.
