Katherine Laverne Yates

Katherine LaVerne Taber Yates passed from this life to eternal life on March 13, 2016. She has joined her husband, parents, her beloved brother and twin sister in heaven. Born July 24, 1922, mother was 93. As one of the “greatest generation”, she had many unique experiences. A native of northern California, she met Dad at the beginning of the war in Vallejo, CA where she worked in a café. As he went to war (Navy Submariner) she became a ‘Rosie the Riveter’. She worked on subs at Mare Island. She and her twin sister are both honored to be part of the ‘Rosie’ Museum in CA. She and Dad married in 1945 and she became an official Navy wife until Dad’s retirement in 1959. Then she moved to Florida (Dad’s home state) where she experienced the cultural shock of becoming a Southerner. Taking a job at Monsanto in the early sixties, she retired in the mid-seventies. Mother used those retirement years to pursue her passions – art and music. She first pursued her art. Leaving her artwork as reminders of not only her artistic abilities but memories of her life. Her other passion was music. Her voice was her instrument. She shared this talent by joining the Bells & Beaux for twenty years. She loved entertaining at nursing homes and other venues. Mother also joined the Sub-vets, an auxiliary organization of men who served on submarines. With this group, she served as president for many years and enjoyed her participation. She also enjoyed the friends, she made at the weekly luncheons. Mother leaves to honor her memory three children, Palmus (Buddy) Yates (Lisa), Hattie (Bruce) Shenberger and Conni Yates Ramey (the late Pat); five grandchildren, Jessica Dobbs (Kevin Franklin), Palmus (Trey) Yates III, William Ramey, Travis Ramey and Michael Dobbs II; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler Yates and Mitchell Franklin. Mother had many friends, expecially her best friend, Mary Aderhold. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 16, 2016 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North. A graveside service will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery at 12:30 pm. Reverend Pat Mobley will be officiating. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Mother will be laid to rest with Dad. Mother always said that she would rather enjoy flowers in this life, not after. Flowers will be accepted but donations to charity in her honor will be accepted. Memorials can be made to the American Heart, Covenant Hospice, or any military association. The family appreciates the care and support lent during this time from West Florida Hospital, Life Care Center and Covenant Hospice. Please remember Mom as you knew her during her life with us.
