June Pearl Ashley Friend

June Friend, passed away on September 27, 2011, at The Life Care Center of Pensacola. She is survived by her two children Val Harmon (Frank) of Gulf Breeze and Miles Ashley Friend (Sarah) of North Andover, Massachusetts. She also leaves her five beloved grandchildren, Kay Groth (John) of Palm City, Florida, Michelle and Andy Harmon of Gulf Breeze, and Christopher and Julia Friend of North Andover, as well as three cherished great-grandchildren, Natalie, Kelly, and Matthew. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Wycoff Friend. June was born November 8, 1921, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the only child of the late Ted and Irene Ashley. She graduated from Senn High School in Chicago, Illinois, and in January 1946, married George Friend. A fun-loving couple, they lived many happy years in Chicago and Peoria, Illinois, dancing to the Big Bands, playing golf, and enjoying fishing trips to the Great Lakes with their many friends, before moving their family to Pensacola Beach in 1962. June enjoyed a successful and fulfilling career as an editor for a large national trade publishing company in Chicago, and as a bookkeeper for Pfeiffer Printing and the Medical Center Clinic in Pensacola. She was an avid reader, loved music and a good crossword; she was a great bowler, and best friend to all the cats she took in over the years. June especially enjoyed her many summers spent with her son Miles and his family at Newfound Lake in New Hampshire where she enjoyed boating, beach time, and making many new friends. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at the Life Care Center of Pensacola and Covenant Hospice for their compassionate care and kindness. A private internment will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery at a later date.
