Joseph A Choppin

Joseph Anthony Choppin was born on August 12, 1942 in New Orleans, LA. He was the youngest of the family since he was born 5 minutes after this twin brother, James. They have an older sister, Katherine. He attended St. Anne's and St. Dominic Catholic Schools in New Orleans, LA and St. Aloysius in high school. After which Joe and Jim both joined the Navy Air Reserve in April, 1951 at 1-9 years old. They attended monthly drills for 1 year, then left for active duty on April 1-8, 1962. They were both stationed to overseas duty aboard the U.S.S. Shangri-LA (CVA-38). He thoroughly enjoyed his time in the Navy, as we have heard countless stories of their escapades on the ship. Joe was in hardwood lumber sales for 46 years. He enjoyed working in sales, because he was a people-person who never met a stranger. He had friends at every shop he called on. Joe and his wife Paula moved to Pensacola, FL in 1990. Joe is a Lifetime Member of the Knights of Columbus. He joined the K of C in New Orleans, LA in 1972 with St. Dominic's Council. He is a charter member of St. Mary’s Council, and was also a member of Santa Maria's Council at St. Jude. He was involved in Church Ministry as Sacristan, Extra-Ordinary Minister of the Eucharist, and Usher at St. Mary's and 5t. Jude's Catholic Church. After he retired, he worked part-time for Enterprise Remarketing for 9 years. He was known as "Little Joe with a Big Heart." He had many friends there, and they all say that they will miss him greatly. Joe was preceded in death by his father, Alton B. Choppin and his mother Cecelia Carney Choppin. He is survived by his loving wife, Paula Trentacoste Choppin of 31 years; his sons, Joseph A. Choppin, Jr. (Jennifer), and Thomas S. Choppin (Bridget); Step-daughter, Melinda E. Blanchard; grandchildren: Hannah, Ashton, and Bailey Choppin; and Michael J. Blanchard; siblings: Katherine M. Choppin, sister, and James E. Choppin, brother; and many nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends who will miss him greatly. Visitation on Monday, Oct.4, 2O21 at Faith Chapel North, Cantonment, FL from 9:30-10:30 am. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 401 Van Pelt Lane, Pensacola, FL 32505 at 11:30 am. Burial at Barrancas National Cemetery at 1-:00pm In lieu of flowers, Masses are preferred or donation to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
