James Winston Singletary

JAMES WINSTON SINGLETARY 1937 – 2020 James (Jim) Singletary, age 83, passed away on December 22, 2020. Visitation with the family will be from 11 to 12:00, December 30, 2020, at Faith Funeral Home North with services following at 12. Private Burial will follow the services at Barancus National Cemetery. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Charles Percy Singletary, his mother, Pearl (Singletary) Evans, and stepfather Jesse Evans. He is survived by his wife (married December 30, 1958) of 62 years, Patricia June (Day) Singletary; one daughter, Cindy (Rick) Vega of Valdosta, Georgia; two grandchildren, Gabrielle Parker (Cole), Nicholas Vega; one great grandson, Janson Vega, one brother Charles (Jeane) Singletary of Memphis, TN; one sister Sarah (Ed) Tamasovich of Ashville, NC; and step brother Lt. Col Kimmel Evans. Jim is also survived by many dear Nieces, Nephews, and cousins. Born on March 13, 1937, in Houston County, Alabama. His parents moved to Pensacola, FL when Jim was two years old. After graduating from Troy State Teachers College in 1958, James taught mathematics in Huntsville Alabama. To clear up his draft status, he joined the United States Army. James was a veteran of the Vietnam War. James and Pat were married in December 1958 and lived in Falls Church, VA while in service. In 1961, James and Pat moved to Nashville, TN where he did graduate work at George Peabody College. He and Pat returned to Pensacola in 1961 where James worked for Escambia County School Board at Escambia High School and Woodham High School as Math Department Chairman. James taught in the evening program at Pensacola Junior College, Adult High School, 1961-1968. During the summers of 1962, 1963, and 1964, James attended the University of Tennessee for graduate work in mathematics. James worked with the Naval Aviation Schools Command from 1968 to 1974 where he taught Math and Physics and wrote six programmed texts for use at the school. During this time, James did graduate work at the University of West Florida where he majored in Education Administration and Supervision, receiving a Masters Degree in 1974. James then accepted a position with the Chief of Naval Education and Training Support (CNETS) where he worked as Program Manager for developing training at the Electronic Warfare School at Corry Station. While at CNETS, the Navy sent James to Florida State University to do graduate work in Curriculum Development. He then accepted a position on the staff of the Chief Naval Education Training Command (CNET) where he filled several positions. In the late 1980’s, James became the CNET/NAVY representative to DOD for Section 6 Dependent Schools, a position he held until his retirement in January 1995. He was an active member of Olive Baptist Church, where he served in the Military Ministry, Sunday School Director and various other capacities. He was nominated and served at deacon at Brownsville Baptist Church, prior to moving to Olive. James served as a Telephone Counselor with the Evangelism Response Center sponsored by the North American Mission Board. A celebration of his life will be held at Faith Chapel North on Wednesday, December 30, 2020. Dr. Jerry Passmore will officiate.
