James Alton Mathews

James Alton Mathews left a legacy of honor and steadfast love. He spent his time helping family and friends with his wealth of talents and loving them with all of his heart. On November 22, 2022 he finished his work on earth and went to his heavenly home at the age of 74. He was born in Crestview, Florida, October 4, 1948 to parents Travis and Lois Mathews. James was many things to many people: husband, Daddy, Poppie, son, brother, friend, and so much more. James loved his family big. He married Elsa in 1968. She was the love of his life for over 54 years. The love they shared grew more with each passing year. Their Godly and loving marriage was an example for all to follow. They had one daughter, Tammy (Roger) Barnhill and two grandchildren, Morgan & Trent. They were his heart in every way. He supported them in all they did and loved to share in their accomplishments. There is no other title that could have made him any more proud than that of Daddy and Poppie James joined the Army National Guard in 1968, serving a 6-year enlistment. Professionally, he worked at Westinghouse for over 30 years. He was an accomplished welder who worked his way up from a beginning welder to a technician in the Advanced Technology Center. After retiring from there, he went on to be a Welding Instructor at George Stone. To many of his students, he was not just a teacher but also a mentor who invested in their character, work ethic, and life skills. He had many talents and loved to spend time doing so many things. Bass and crappie fishing were high on his list. Turkey hunting was a favorite Spring hobby. He sang and played guitar and mandolin beautifully. His list of work talents was endless: welding, construction, electrical, to name a few. He was a jack-of-all-trades in every way. James served in the Gateswood Volunteer Fire Department. He was always willing to answer calls and make himself available to help those in need. He spent many days working on various projects at the fire station. He quickly became an integral part of the team who will be missed greatly. Most importantly, James was a child of God. He gave his heart to God 43 years ago. Since that time, he walked his life devoted to God. He served Him and loved with all his heart, living the life of a believer and one that would be acceptable to God. He would tell you this was the most important decision he ever made and would encourage you to do the same. James is preceded in death by father, William Travis Mathews; mother, Martha Lois Collinsworth Mathews; brother William Eugene Mathews; an infant brother; brother Gregory Dale Mathews; and sister, Joyce Mathews Cordell. James is survived by his wife of 54 years Elsa King Mathews; daughter Tammy (Roger) Barnhill; grandchildren Morgan Barnhill & Trent Barnhill; sisters Faye Cook and Debbie Proscia; brother Robert Mathews; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family, & friends. A celebration of his joyous homecoming will be held Monday, November 28, 2022 at Faith Chapel North with visitation at 10:00, service at 11:00, and graveside service immediately following at Little Flock Baptist Church.
