James Lucas Massey

James (Jim) L. Massey, of Pensacola, Fl. passed on Monday, 19Oct2020, after a relative short period of poor health, not helped by hurricane Sally. The family moved to Pensacola area shortly after his birth in Montgomery, Al. on 20Dec1936. Parents: Clyde A. Massey and Margaret F. Massey; brothers William A. and Richard A.; sister Dorothy S. Massey, all who preceded Jim in death; no surviving family members, known. Jim reported as a kid, he had a paper route off Scenic Highway with a whopping 68 customers between the south end and "tator town" on the north. A 1954 graduate of PHS, he spent most of his life in the Pensacola area. After high school, he enlisted the Navy, then attended PJC (PSC) and Auburn Univ, graduating in 1963, with an Aerospace Engineering degree. His first engineering job was at Brookley field, shortly leaving to move on to NARF (Naval Aviation Rework Facility) at NAS, Pensacola until his retirement. He advance in NARF to be an expert on helicopter mechanical systems, providing expert design and accident investigation support for the Navy. In retirement he continued and expanded his passion for building and using things that moved quickly. Jim was an avid sports car builder, racer, and enthusiast, as well as long time sport bike rider. He served both as president of the Miracle Strip Corvette Club and as RE of the Gulf Coast region of SCCA. He raced SCCA with a couple of Sprites; worked races/events at Corry Station and Bronson Field locally. He was always towards the fastest cars in any solo event. An early Bow-Tie interest saw him in Corvettes and Cameros; later he shifted interest to Blue Oval, Ford products. In addition to drving Mustangs, he did a total restoration of a Lola Formula Ford, which he soloed successfully, His final project was a beautiful Factory Five Daytona Cobra Coupe, that could be seen cruising town in recent years while, in his words: "out knocking about". If not in a car, he was on his motorcycle. At 70, he added a Hyabusia to his "fleet", said he figured it was time for a 200 mph motorcycle. His other interests included water skiing, bicycle riding, photography, lifting weights, walks, anything Auburn, and outings with good friends. A humble, unassuming, individual, Jim would gladly lend a hand, advice, or support to others. He asked little, expected nothing. Gave inspiration to many young minds sparking curiosity about cars and things mechanical. Many now in their 40's, fondly recall seeing "Mr. Massey" working on something in his open garage. He'd take time to talk with any that wanted to know what he was doing....adding to the next generation of gearheads. We're sure Jim was thankful for the kind help and care of Covenant Hospice at West Florida Hospital during his last days. Also, he definitely appreciated the support and help of Barbara Cowen, in making decisions towards the end. Her help brought him comfort. Long time friends, Jim and Lana Beagles are making final arrangements. There will be no funeral or ceremony. Jim will be laid to final rest in Bayview Cemetery in near future.
