James Gregory Landy

James Gregory Landy 1948-2012 Senior Chief Petty Officer James G. Landy, USN (Ret), died peacefully in his home with family near on November 22, 2012, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in 1948 in Darby, PA to Mary and John Landy. Jim had a passion for tinkering with motors & engines; that & a family tradition for military service led Jim to join the US Navy in 1967, where he eventually became a flight engineer. His career took him around the world, with duty locations in Rhode Island, California, New Zealand, Antarctica, Hawaii, New Orleans, Rota, Spain. After a 26 year career, Jim retired from Saufley Field Pensacola, the same duty location where he started his career. He then joined Bellview Volunteer Fire Department. He only wanted to “play” on the fire engines, but due to his charisma & leadership abilities he quickly was promoted through the ranks, achieving the status of Chief for a second time. After “retiring” from the fire department, Jim was hired by TSM in 2002. TSM worked around Jim’s health battles & he was proud to work for TSM until two months prior to his death. Jim was a man of many names: Greg, JG, Daddy, Dad, Poppy, fly boy, Uncle, Chief, Senior Chief, mentor, Veteran, advocate, haole-wood. But no matter what you called Jim, once you met him, he was hard to forget. Jim could quickly win over hearts of all he met with his unique perspective on life & his epic storytelling abilities. With sound effects, comical facial expressions & lively hand gestures, Jim was a throw back to the oral storytellers. He could fabricate a tale with such gusto, weaving fact with fiction so closely that many will never know the truth behind his tales. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Pam. Surviving children include daughter Maria Landy, daughter Sonya Hollingsworth & son-in-law Jonathan Hollingsworth. Jim was blessed with two grandsons, Christian & Aiden Hollingsworth. Surviving siblings include brother John Landy, brother Joseph (Sarah) Landy, sister Suzanne (James) Knapp. Jim also held close his family in New Zealand, & all his nieces & nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at Barrancas National Cemetery at 12:30 PM on December 5th 2012 with a reception afterwards at 301 E Gadsden St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Hospice, 5401 N 12th Ave, Pensacola, FL 32504.
