Howard Grover Rappold

Howard G. Rappold, age 91, a resident of Pensacola since 1976 died on January 3, 2019. Howard was a proud 30 year veteran of the US Army from which he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer-4 in Jan 1976 at Ft Meyer, Va. Howard entered the Army as a draftee in 1945. He served as an infantry rifleman in Germany. Later, he worked his way up to become a Special Agent in the Counter Intelligence Corps. He served in military intelligence in Germany and Vietnam. He witnessed the building of the Berlin Wall. His last military duty was in Washington DC as Supervisor of Special Investigations for National Security for the Defense Investigative Service. Howard received numerous medals and awards in his military career including the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal. In civilian life, Howard was a police officer and detective in Baltimore County MD, a federal investigator (Civil Service) in Germany and Washington DC, a Court Security Officer for the federal and state courts in Pensacola Fl and a polygraph examiner for a security company in Pensacola Fl. Howard was born and raised in Sparrows Point, MD. He graduated from high school in 1944 and in 1975 was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Upper Iowa University in Fayette Iowa with a Bachelors of Art degree in Public Administration. Howard is predeceased by his bride of 57 years - the former Geraldine (Jerry) Adamson of Monessen PA. His last living sibling, a younger brother Frances, died just weeks ago in Maryland. Howard was a lifelong member of the Retired Officers Association, VFW, American Legion, AMVETS, DAV, the US Army Warrant Officers Association and the National Rifle Association. He was also a member of the Elks, Moose, National Counter Intelligence Corps Association and the Army Counter Intelligence Corps Veterans. Howard and Jerry retired to Pensacola in 1976. They spent their retirement years keeping in touch with military friends. They traveled throughout the US in their Holiday Rambler RV. He moved to assisted living in 2017. There will be a public viewing Wed January 9th starting at noon at the Faith Chapel Funeral Home South to be followed by a service at 1pm and burial in Barrancas National Cemetery.
