Hines McNair

Hines Drew McNair was born on New Year’s Day 1921 in Pensacola, Florida and went home to be with the Lord on June 10, 2014. He is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Marjorie Reasons McNair, his parents John and Ruth Cravey McNair, and his brother Emmett Trenton McNair. He is survived by his sister Elisabeth Davy, his three children: Karla Summerford (Neal), Cheri Miller (Alan), and Russ McNair (Denise), his seven grandsons: Mitchell Gardner (Ellen), Rusty McNair (Nikki), Brandon McNair, Rhett Summerford (Heather), Jonathan Ryan McNair (Maria), Wesley Summerford, Andrew McNair, and his nine great grandchildren: Dawson, Ethan, Davis, Drew, Lyla, Cooper, Laila, Max, and Daxton. Hines was a Pensacola native raised in the Brownsville and West Hill districts of town and graduated from Pensacola High School in 1938. He was a dedicated student never missing a day of school in 12 years. Hines later attended various college courses in his Navy career and graduated from UWF in 1975. Hines joined the United States Navy the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, proceeded through boot camp in Key West Florida, and later joined his brother Emmett at NAS Saufley Field as an aircraft fireman. During WWII he was assigned to a small aircraft repair squadron on Maui, Hawaii. After returning from the war to Pensacola, as a Chief Petty Officer, he met the love of his life, Marjorie Leo Reasons of Humboldt, Tennessee, and they were married after a short engagement on May 2, 1947. Hines was very proud to serve his country in the United States Navy. He traveled the world on numerous deployments and had duty stations in Florida, Hawaii, Alaska and Maine. He retired in 1972 after 30 years of dedicated service. Hines was a man of strong faith and modeled his life after his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He and Marge were members of Whitfield Baptist Church during his military years of service. Once retired, they helped establish Pine Summit Baptist Mission. They later joined Myrtle Grove Baptist Church where he held many offices such as Sunday School Director, Chairman of Deacons, and actively participated with Marge in the “Keenagers” ministry of the church. “Mac” as he was known to his close friends, loved the people in his local community as well as those in his church family. He was active in playing golf with many of his fellow retired veterans, and was a member of the Sand Crabs. He was an active member of the Bellview Lions Club, and participated as a charter member of the original “Brownsville Boys” breakfast group which continues to meet. Hines was honored to be onboard Pensacola’s first “Honor Flight” that flew to Washington D.C. Hines was a great father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor to all. He had a way of showing a sincere love for everyone he met. In every conversation he would always remember to share how blessed he was and gave all the glory to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Hines was truly a “good and faithful servant”. The family would like to thank the church members, community friends, and doctors, nurses, and staff of West Florida Hospital and the Specialty Care Center for their love, concern and compassionate care. Visitation will be on Monday, June 16, 2014, from 10:00 – 11:00am at Faith Chapel Funeral Home- South. The funeral service will be from 11:00 – 12:00 with Dr. Alton Butler and Reverend Ron Lentine of Myrtle Grove Baptist Church officiating. A graveside service will be held at 12:30 at Barrancas National Cemetery onboard NAS Pensacola. Active pallbearers will be his seven grandsons: Mitchell Gardner, Rusty McNair, Brandon McNair, Rhett Summerford, Jonathan Ryan McNair, Wesley Summerford, and Andrew McNair.
