Gwendolyn Ann Clark

Gwendolyn Ann (Schwartze) Clark passed away on January 7, 2023, with her family present to comfort her, after a battle with a rare form of cancer. Born on June 1, 1947 to Iona and Adolph Schwartze of St. Louis, MO, she was raised in St. Louis, attaining a Bachelor’s Degree (1969) from the University of Missouri – St. Louis. She fell in love with George Clark while attending University of Kentucky - Lexington, where she received her Master’s Degree (1970) in Library Science. They returned to Saint Louis together in 1970, where she worked for the St. Louis Public Library. She married George in the campus chapel of Saint Louis University the next year, celebrating 51 years of joyful adventure in marriage. In 1974, they moved together to Pensacola, FL to pursue George’s civilian job offer at NAS Pensacola. Gwen fully embraced the Florida life, decorating her home in reminders of her beloved beach and its inhabitants. Gwen helped make the world a better place every day. As a social services case worker of 34 years, she used her skills to protect children as an abuse investigator and a day care inspector. Gwen also made her community better by volunteering at numerous local organizations, including long-time positions ushering at the Pensacola Little Theatre, Saenger Theatre, WSRE Amos Studio and as a volunteer at Baptist Hospital. She was a proud citizen of Pensacola, enjoying all the restaurants and entertainment her adopted community had to offer, becoming a known regular at many spots around town. An avid traveler, Gwen has cruised to nearly every city where a cruise ship stops, with George by her side, and her travels included a sweepstakes win from PBS Masterpiece Theatre to visit London, including a tour of Downton Abbey’s Highclere Castle. As her Catholic faith tells her, she goes now to join her mother and father. She is survived by her husband George Clark, her sister Mary Carpenter, her niece Kimberly Carpenter, and her family-in-law: sister Susan Trottier & her husband Marc, sister Anne Clark, nieces Mary Trottier-Granger (husband Bryan) and Amy Trottier-Meacham (husband Bruce), grand niece Audrey Meacham and grand nephews Nathan Meacham and Brendan Granger. The family gives grateful thanks to Dr. Drake and his team at Baptist Hospital, all the doctors, nurses, and staff at Baptist Hospital who cared for and about Gwen, and the kind staff of Emerald Coast Hospice. As Gwen takes her walk with the Lord, there will always be two sets of footprints in the sand, as Gwen would never miss a chance to walk on the beach. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Faith Chapel Funeral Home South.
