Ella Jean Griffith

In the early morning of November 3, 2014, Jean Griffith passed peacefully into her next life surrounded by family and loved ones. She was 85 years old. We know that Jean is beyond excited to join her husband, parents and so many other friends and family whom she missed so much. Jean had a strong faith in God that sustained her through her life and helped her witness and minister to others until the very end of her time on earth. She had a fun sense of adventure, a zest for life and really enjoyed making others laugh. Jean was born on February 6, 1929 to Rufus and Alberta Myrick Conger. She spent her formative years in and around Montgomery, Alabama before moving to Pensacola as a young teenager. Jean loved Pensacola and was always a big fan of Pensacola Beach. She often mentioned riding her bike across the bridge to Pensacola Beach, back when there were few cars. Jean graduated from Pensacola High School and from Pensacola Jr. College as a registered nurse. Jean was preceded in death by her devoted husband of almost 61 years, Robert “Hunk” Griffith. She is survived by four children: Kirk Griffith (Patti), Cary Griffith (Brenda), Cindy Sheffield (Glenn) and Ginny Hinton (Dean). Jean also leaves eight grandchildren: Chastity VanMeter(Stan), April Jones (Bobby), Schyler Sheffield (Katie), Deidra McGill, Kirkland Griffith (Carrie), Celia Griffith, Ian Griffith and Alex Ritchie. Jean is also survived by seven beautiful great grandchildren who added life and color to her world. She was able to see ultrasound photos and was looking forward to the birth of her eighth great-grandchild in December. Friends of the family are invited to visitation at Faith Chapel Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 5, from 4-5 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 6 at 9 a.m. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Alex Ritchie, Ian Griffith, Kirkland Griffith, Schyler Sheffield, Glenn Sheffield and Dean Hinton. The family is grateful for the opportunity to offer heartfelt thanks to two very special ladies. Laura Cobb Worthylake, RN, a lifelong friend and adopted family member, stood by the family guiding them and Jean to a more peaceful end. Julie Knutson came late into Jean’s life as her caregiver but established a strong bond with her and went far above and beyond “the call of duty”. We will be forever grateful and words cannot express the thankfulness and love we feel for you both. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to East Brent Baptist Church where Jean was an active member for over 40 years.
