Edward Chin Park

Edward Chin Park, age 99, passed away on May 13, 2018 in Pensacola, FL, after a long and full life. Born in Boston, MA, he was the son of the late Chin Park Doon and Ting Ying Eng. He moved to Lynn, MA, at a very young age and then later to Kowloon, Hong Kong, where he spent the rest of his childhood. He attended Diocesan Boys School in Hong Kong and studied under Headmaster C. B. R. Sargent, who later became Bishop of the Diocese of Fukien of the Anglican Church. After graduation in 1935, Edward boarded the steamship R.M.S. “Empress of Canada” and returned to the U.S.A.. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture in 1940. He then attended Harvard University where he received a Master’s Degree in Architecture and a Master’s Degree in City Planning. He was part of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps while at M.I.T.. Due to his course of study and degrees, he was chosen after graduation to work as an architectural engineer at the United States Engineers Office, Wright Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio from 1941 to 1943. He was site planner and assistant in charge of the development of the Master Plan for Wright Field, Air Service Command, and Patterson Field. During the latter years of the War, he worked as a structural engineer at the Glenn L. Martin Company in Baltimore, MD, doing structural analysis and design of aircraft such as the Martin Mars JRM Flying Boat. He returned to Boston in 1945 where he met his future wife, Iris Lane Warren, who had moved to Boston after graduating from Smith College in Northampton, MA. The two wed in 1957 and moved to Baltimore where Edward worked for Baltimore Contractors, Inc.. In 1959, he started E. C. Park and Company, an architecture and city planning firm. He designed numerous buildings in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. area throughout his career. Edward was a staunch proponent of education and the pursuit of excellence. After receiving his degrees he took numerous courses at Johns Hopkins University, Boston University, Northeastern University, University of Baltimore, and University of Maryland in subjects ranging from Engineering, Aerodynamics, and Soil Mechanics to Real Estate and Law. He also maintained his fluency in the Chinese language by attending Mandarin classes for many years at the Chinese Language School in Baltimore. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Iris Warren Park; two sisters - Anne Mark of Hong Kong and Patricia Yong of San Francisco CA; two sisters-in-law - Ute Park of Marlborough, MA and Elaine Chan of Millbrae, CA; two children - David Park and his wife Fiona Park of New Canaan CT and Marianne Tullus and her husband Bud Tullus of Pensacola, FL; and four wonderful grandchildren Olivia Park, Daniel Park, David Tullus, and Gunnar Tullus. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings David Chin Park, Henry Chin Park, Thomas Chan, and May Louie.
