Chipley Arthur Clopton

CHIPLEY A. CLOPTON MARCH 4, 1936 --- JANUARY 2, 2018 Chipley passed away peacefully on January 2, 2018. He was born in Pensacola, Florida, and was the eldest child of Captain Sidney and Agnes (Lockwood) Clopton. He grew up in an era of hard times; however, he was instilled with values that carried him throughout life: Catholic faith, hard work, family ties, and good humor. Chipley learned the skill of net fishing and shrimping at an early age. He began his shrimping career under Captain Frank Patti while working on the shrimp trawler “Guiding Star”. Eventually, Frank helped Chipley purchase a boat of his own named the “Mystical Rose”, while also owning a net boat named the “Papas Pleasure”. He was a man of many talents and learned most of his boating skills from his father, Captain Sidney. One of the talents he so enjoyed was making shrimp nets, purse seine nets, and cast nets; as well as the repairing of nets. He eventually owned and operated a net shop, where he helped countless fishermen. He was a Master Mason of Escambia Lodge 15. Chipley also enjoyed bird hunting with his close friends Dr. Michael Jasper, Mr. Perry Baniakas, his brothers, and with his companion, Frances Lassiter’s sons, and their children. He will be missed by so many. Chipley is preceded in death by wives Lillie B. Clopton; Martha Clopton; parents, Captain Sidney and Agnes (Lockwood) Clopton, brother Jerry Clopton, granddaughter Crystal Ann Dunaway-Robinson. He is survived by his two daughters, Kathy Kay (Johnny) Stringer, Deborah Dawn Coburn and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a long time loving friend and companion, Frances Lasister; along with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who loved him very much and held a special place in his heart. His sisters: Loice Jackson, Sheila Jernigan, Joyce & Franklin Edgar, Gail & Vincent Baglioni. His brothers: Sidney Jeff Clopton & Merelyn, Johnnie & Joyce Clopton, Tommy Clopton and Patricia, David Clopton and Debbie. He has numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends that will always remember him calling them “sugar boogers” as his expression of love. Active pallbearers are: Michael Castro, Cory Jackson (Terry Jackson), Alfred Jackson, John Quina, Justin Smith, Timothy Mallery, Christian Murphy, and Shane Clopton. Honorary pallbearers are: Jeff, Johnnie, Tommy and David Clopton, Frank Patti, Tony Minton, the Lasister's and the Hick's. Visitation will be Friday, January 12, 2018, 5 pm – 8 pm. The rosary will begin at 5:30 pm with Father Nicholas Schumm. Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm, Saturday, January 13, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Msgr. Stephen Bosso officiating. Burial will follow services in Clopton Cemetery with Faith Chapel directing. A memorial reception will follow graveside services at St. John Evangelist Catholic Church.
