Carl Wesley Nesbitt Jr.

Carl W. Nesbitt, 93, passed away June 10th, 2014. Born February 18, 1921 in Syracuse, NY, Carl spent his childhood in Honolulu, HI., where his father was an Army chemist. After his father's sudden death in 1933, his family relocated to Lakewood, NJ, the home of his widowed mother. He graduated Lakewood H.S. in 1939 where he excelled in academics and athletics. On May 6th, 1937, while a sophomore, he aided the civilian ground crew at Lakehurst Naval Air Station during the tragic explosion of the German airship, the Hindenburg. He was awarded a commendation for bravery and good citizenship. In May 1941, he married his high school sweetheart, Genevieve Mancini. In 1940, Carl enlisted in the U.S. Army and served 9 years on active duty achieving the rank of Captain. He retired from the Army Reserves as a Lt. Colonel. A WWII veteran, Carl served 3 years overseas in Patton's 3rd Army. Among the rewards he received for his time in service were the Purple Heart, American Campaign and WWII Victory medals. His career spanned 42 years from active military service to federal civil service. In 1961, Carl and his family transferred from Lakehurst NAS to Pensacola NAS where he worked in Overhaul and Repair. He advanced from aircraft mechanic to General Foreman and Supervisor of the O & R department. He was dedicated to his work and the people who worked for him. On December 21st, 1979, he received the Retirement Commendation from the Naval Air Reworks Facility. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church for over 50 years and after his retirement, he spent 10 years volunteering as a grounds keeper and maintenance man. He continued his service to the community, volunteering at St. Vincent De Paul, St. Anne's Annual Roundup and at a local chapter of the Boy Scouts of America. He was generous in his donations to the Humane Society and many other charitable organizations. He is preceded in death by his parents: Carl W. Nesbitt Sr. and Francis Coleman Nesbitt, as well as his granddaughter: Kendall K. Nesbitt. He is survived by his wife of 73 years: Genevieve “Jeanne” Nesbitt; his sister, Dorthea Pressburger (of Howell, NJ); children, Carl F. Nesbitt (Rechelle) and Michele N. Carter (Jay); grandchildren, Taylor Nezovich (Jody), Kathleen M. Carter and Kristen T. Carter; great grandson, Silas M. Nezovich; four nieces and one nephew. He was a devoted husband and father and dearly loved his grandchildren. He was an accomplished man, who loved sports and his country. He was a proud American and will be missed by all. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 15th from 2:00-3:00 p.m. with a memorial service following at Faith Chapel Funeral Home South, 100 Beverly Pkwy. Interment will take place the following Tuesday, June 17th at 11:00 a.m. at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations to be made to the Wounded Warriors Project and/or the Humane Society of Pensacola.
